Teen Marijuana Use Shows No Effect On Brain Tissue, Unlike Alcohol, Study Finds
A teen who consumes alcohol is likely to have reduced brain tissue health, but a teen who uses marijuana is not, according to a new study.
Researchers scanned the brains of 92 adolescents, ages 16 to 20, before and after an 18-month period. During that year and a half, half of the teens — who already had extensive alcohol and marijuana-use histories — continued to use marijuana and alcohol in varying amounts. The other half abstained or kept consumption minimal, as they had throughout adolescence.

Study: Cannabis Associated With Lower Diabetes Risk
(NORML) Adults with a history of marijuana use have a lower prevalence of type 2 diabetes and possess a lower risk of contracting the disease than those with no history of cannabis consumption, according to clinical trial data published in the British Medical Journal.
Investigators at the University of California, Los Angeles assessed the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and marijuana use among adults aged 20 to 59 in a nationally representative sample of the US population of 10,896 adults. The study included four groups: non-marijuana users (61.0%), past marijuana users (30.7%), light (one to four times/month) (5.0%) and heavy (more than five times/month) current marijuana users (3.3%). Diabetes was defined based on self-report or abnormal glycaemic parameters.

Could cannabis revitalize the economy?
(RPN) In 1971 President Richard Nixon declared a war on drugs, and U.S. taxpayers have been funding the campaign for more than 40 years. According to the Associated Press, spending for the Drug War in 2010 was $15.5 billion at the federal level.
Today the U.S. is the most highly incarcerated society in the world with 2.3 million Americans behind bars. About one-quarter of them are there for drug-related offenses…
Award winning journalist and author Doug Fine had the same opinion in his latest book, “Too High to Fail.” Fine makes an argument for the removal of cannabis from the banned federal substances list. Fine traveled to Mendocino County, Calif., to monitor, what he calls, “lucrative civil disobedience.”
In 2011, the county approved an ordinance that allowed farmers to grow and sell marijuana.
Each farmer paid $8,500 to grow 99 plants, one plant below the federal limit for conspiracy, and the county made $602,000 and saved the jobs of seven deputies.

Like many cancer patients, Mykayla Comstock takes medical marijuana to ease the often intense side effects of chemotherapy. But unlike other patients, Mykayla is a 7-year-old with leukemia.
Her mom Erin Purchase says the pills pushed Mykayla into remission, seemed to boost her appetite and decreased the nausea from her chemotherapy treatments. “It helps me eat and sleep,” Mykayla told the Oregonian.
But her father doesn’t agree, and some doctors and researchers say they’re worried about the effect medical marijuana could have on a developing child.
What do you think? Should seriously ill young children be given medical marijuana?

I don’t even see why MMJ is an argument anymore, it’s a plant that clearly has medical benefits, and doesn’t have horrific side-effects, if it was an uncontrolled substance, no-one would even be batting an eyelid. People take painkillers that have worse effects on your body every single day, why don’t you ever see headlines like “MOTHER GIVES CHILD IBUPROPHEN.”
Also, the way 95% of media gives MMJ the same image as recreational drug use is irritating; “Pot Tot”, there definitely needs to be a clearer distinction between cases like this and recreational users, it’s not like that seven year old is tooting bongs, so why lump the two together just because the treatment and plant are similar.

Pot Fights Breast Cancer
For years, cancer patients have used pot to combat the side effects of chemotherapy. But evidence has grown, both clinical and anecdotal, that cannabis has the potential to impede the spread of cancer itself. Now, researchers in Japan are reporting that CBDA keeps breast cancer cells from spreading.

CBD, the miracle of component of cannabis that has been shown to have profound efficacy as a pain reliever, is obtained from its parent molecule, cannabidiolic acid or CBDA. Until now, investigators have wondered whether CBDA is biologically active. But the study reports: “CBDA is an inhibitor of highly aggressive human breast cancer cell migration.”

“Unavoidable” Bacon Shortage Predicted for 2013
The UK’s National Pig Association published a dire prediction last week: “a world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable.” As crops around the world fail and pig feed prices rise, farmers are culling their herds, cutting the number of fatty bellies that will be available for delicious curing and sale. British Pig Executive’s Mick Sloyan “warned a private meeting of British and mainland Europe retailers” that “a fall of only 2 percent in slaughterings next year will cause prices to rise by 10 percent.”

Marijuana And Cancer: Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Stops Metastasis In Aggressive Cancers
A pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has found that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, potentially altering the fatality of the disease forever.
“It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited,” said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery, to The Huffington Post. “We want to get started with trials as soon as possible.”

Instagram Hashtags Help Aussie Police Crack Down on Marijuana
Police are cracking down on illegal grow-ops and marijuana possession in Australia right now, thanks in part to the help of snap-happy potheads who flag their Instagram photos with tags like #aussiestoners #weedstagram and #oznugs.
A Victoria Police spokesman warned this week that “online dopes” would be tracked and prosecuted through photo-sharing websites, and would face hefty penalties if caught.
“Anyone who posts images of this nature may find themselves subject to a criminal investigation should there be evidence of possession or cultivation of drugs of dependence or illicit substances,” the spokesman told the Herald Sun, a Melbourne-based tabloid.
